Blog #2: Move with or beyond the Business Tsunami

Can we stay out of the Business Tsunami?

A body at rest will remain at rest, and a body in motion will remain in motion. Thank you, Isaac Newton. It’s as true in business as in physics. If you want your product, company, or industry to be the dinosaur of the past, then remain at rest. Kodak proved this theory as they wouldn’t give up the film business to pursue digital photography, which they held the most patents in. Nokia proved this, resting on their superior cell phone technology laurels of the time.

Move, change, upgrade, update – or you too can be an interesting historic footnote. Perform, produce, innovate, transform, and mobilize *or* die. Where is your incubator or innovation flux capacitor?

Are you listening to new ideas or sending them packing? HP snuffed out Steve Wozniak’s silly personal computer idea and the rest is Apple Mac history.

Case Study: Make it better

As an example, the company I joined had been resting on its breakthrough disruptive technology but it was going nowhere. The turnaround was a success because every department, every employee, and every one of our distribution partners stepped into action. We listened to every idea, every complaint, every criticism, and even a few compliments. But we didn’t rest. If it was good, we wanted to make it better. If it was better, we reset the goal post and wanted to make it even better.

Earn mojo points in your business. Take your company, your department, or your team’s time machine to new heights. HG Wells Time Sled of 1895 and the 1960 movie started it all. Ramped up in the 1980’s with the Time Displacement Sphere (Terminator) and Flux Capacitor (Back to the Future). By the 21st century, experiencing innovation success (Harry Potter’s Time-Turner) and failure (Hot Tub Time Machine and Donnie Darko’s jet engine). Even if you aren’t a sci-fi fan you have to recognize that innovation is king.

Real business protection and compelling value come from pace.

  • Keep the pace and momentum of innovation, improvement, and advancement ahead of your competition and you will succeed.

  • Put your innovations in the hands of customers and users. Identify, create, advance, and support use-cases that delight as well as deliver results and solve real customer problems.

Pace of innovation puts you ahead of everyone else. Innovation can be small, microscopic, and sustaining or it can be enormous, ground-breaking, and disruptive. Innovate in every business suite and at every level. Innovate technology, process, people, skills, and customer use-cases.

If it looks like a tsunami to you, that’s because the mammoth wave is moving (your competition or your industry) and you are not. If you are not moving or “standing your ground”, you will quickly get washed over and left behind. If you are keeping pace with the tsunami, you will be swept along in its action but success is far from guaranteed. Moving beyond the forces of the tsunami will position you for success.

Innovation velocity in the marketplace is the real differentiator and tsunami protection.
